The Brief

This project is a proposal for a contemporary library located in Enterprize Park, a junction between the city and the yarra river. The requirements of the brief were that the library reflect our view of a 'contemporary library, satisfying the needs of the public in todays day and age. The constraints of such a challenging site - a rectilinear space jammed between two train lines - required innovative solutions to create a lively space in a otherwise undesireable area

Key concepts

Despite the opposing site conditions, there is one common factor: movement and flow. This design takes the existing movement through and across the site and carefully directs it through the project. The library consists of 4 enclosed cores, with an open plan allowing people to circulat through and around the cores. The library creates a gentle transition through spaces, as it encloses itself as you go upwards to create an increasing sense of privacy and quietness. This is also reflected in the glass brick facade which dissolves into mortar bricks when necessary in order to create moments of intimacy and privacy. Entrances from all sides of the library allow people to easily move across from the city to the river (and vice versa) as they please.
